We've read the book to Tilly a couple of times and she has since read it herself too. The previous film had a certain darkness about it, but with Tim Burton at the helm this promised to be interesting. His films always have some magic about them, except perhaps for <a href=http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0133152/>Planet of the Apes</a>.<p> Burton regular Johnny Depp takes the lead, but plays the part as a neurotic recluse haunted by memories of his dentist father (Christopher Lee). This is not something from the book. The sets are amazing and the kids are pretty much as you would imagine them. The oompa loompas are all played by one actor who had to work hard for his money performing each scene hundreds of times. The trip on the boat is closer to the book and a lot less disturbing than last time.<p> It's a re-interpretation of the book rather than a remake of the previous film. Johnny Depp's Wonka is totally different to Gene Wilder's. The latter is closer to what I imagine from the book, but still not quite right. Neither captures the real joy of Wonka.<p> There are some laughs to be had in this film, with quite a few reserved for knowing adults rather than the kids, but mine enjoyed the film anyway. Tilly rates it as very, very good, but still likes the other film.<p> Overall this version sticks closer to the plot and images of the book.
