After much delay I've been revising the homepage on this site to point to all the places where I am currently active on-line.
The Studio Spoon blog is still going with sporadic posts. I'm pretty active on
Google+ too and that is where I get the majority of my interaction. A more recent
outlet is Tsu. It's yet another social network, but with an interesting business model of
paying users for the views their content brings in. I don't have enough followers to earn much, but some people are earning
several dollars per day.
Otherwise I'm still trying to make music. I need to complete a track for another Six String Bliss
album. I'm taking guitar lessons on Artistworks from the great Paul Gilbert.
He does personal responses to videos I send in, and also interacts via the forum and chat room.
I'll see comments here, but pop over and see me on the other sites some time if you haven't already.

I'm aware that I have been neglecting this site lately. Although I like the simplicity
of the Pyblosxom platform the overhead of
putting together a post means I don't often get the time to put something together.
I've been posting a lot of stuff that might have made it here over on
Google+ as that is very quick
and easy to post on. It's also fairly limited. You can't embed multiple links
or even a Soundcloud player.
I wanted to post some stuff about how I make music that would emphasise the Linux
side and so started a whole new blog using Google's Blogger. It's called
Studio Spoon and already has a few posts.
I'm getting a few hits, that I can monitor via the comprehensive stats page.
I've been added to Planet LinuxMusicians,
which is nice, but adds a bit of pressure. I intend to post about music in general, especially
stuff I record. Anything that doesn't fit there may make it here, so feel free to keep

It seems I haven't posted anything hear in nearly a year. I'm just not finding the time lately. Fairly busy at work then
come home and want to chill by catching up on what is going on around the interent. Lots of cool guitar videos to watch. This site
invoves me taking a bit of time to compose and upload a post and I don't get around to it.
I'm still playing a fair bit. I recently did a track for the latest
Six String Bliss album. That was a pretty simple track done a couple of
very nice guitars, including this one. Recording was via my new,
second-hand, M-Audio Delta 66 interface and Omni breakout box as featured 10 years ago in
Sound On Sound. I picked these up on ebay for a fairly
good price. I still haven't got it totally figured out, but it seems an improvement on my Zoom H4 with less noise. The H4 is
still acting as my microphone and feeding the Delta from the aux out. I'm still using Ardour
to record, and still have much to learn. The latest recordings are to be found on Soundcloud.
I've instigated an acoustic jam session at my local pub as I haven't been getting to the Plough session this year. We've
had 2 so far and the response has been pretty good. Trying to build up the set of players gradually. News on that is via
the Arlesey Facebook group as that reaches the most people.
Although I have not been active here I've really been getting into Google+. I like it a lot more than Facebook and am
having good conversations there, but I can't see the Facebook crown moving over any time soon unless they come up with a
real killer feature. You can find me here. I can easily post there any time, including
from my phone. I'm still using the same HTC Tatto, but have upgraded it to 2.3 using
cyanogen(mod). That's working pretty well and lets me use most apps. I don't feel
a desperate need to get a 'better' phone. This does my podcasts, music, books etc.
I'll try and post here now and again in case anyone is listening. I like to have my own blog, but there are advantages to
using certain social sites.
BTW I have a new GPG/PGP public key. I was inspired to create a more secure one. I haven't made a lot of use of the old
one, but it's another thing I like to have. The new key is
0xFD6922AA. I'm happy to meet up and sign
keys when convenient.

New comments system
I've been using the standard Pyblosxom comment plug-in for a while. It works, but
has limited options. The other day I saw that my friend
has started using the Disqus comments service. This
allows visitors to either sign in with various types of identity or to leave anonymous comments.
You can track you comments on any site using the service.
A quick Google revealed that someone had already implemented a
Pyblosxom plug-in for Disqus.
This was very easy to install and seems to work. I want to get a few things tidied up such as
showing the number of comments on each entry. I also want to tidy the general layout of the
site. The long archive list is untidy. Any suggestions? I'm not much of a web designer.

I'm not finding the time to blog much lately. There's a couple of
things I want to write up, but it generally requires a spare hour to
put anything together, especially if I want to include lots of links.
The main one will be a history of video games I've played. I'm not a
big gamer, but I go back a long way. I keep thinking of more.
Part of the problem is that I have to hack together a text file and
upload it each time. Other blogging platforms make it easier, but I
still like Pyblosxom.
So stay tuned. Meanwhile, here's
something to offend all

Updating the reading list
I've just caught up on logging what I have been reading recently. I need to check if I have omitted
any books. The list is here or you can see
the latest ones in the sidebar. I'm using an add-on for Pyblosxom that requires entering the details
in a slightly contrived style. It uses more comment and category fields than I really need, but I haven't
tried to change that as yet.
I also added in some earlier books from the previous add-on that used a slightly different file format.
I probably could have scripted something to do that, but it took less time to do it manually. I know I lose
geek points for that.

Lacking Time To Compose Updates
I have a number of things that I want to blog, but have been short of
time. Last week I was skiing in France. Had a lot of fun. I may blog
more about that. I've almost finished another book that I need to
review. Then last night I was at HertsLUG where Malc gave a good talk
on the issues with OOXML. I also had a chance to play with an Asus
EEE there. I want one.
I am more active on my Twitter account as that is easy to update
from web or via IM, but only handles short messages. For the blog I
have to compose a post in an editor and FTP it. I like to take the
time to think about what I want to say, but sometimes end up rushing it.
So if you want the latest news follow me on
Twitter. Or just take the
RSS feed here for the infrequent posts. Comment if you want to respond
Oops, too many http in a link there. I'm writing this in nano via

Rewriting the URL
I've wanted for ages to make the URLs on this site simpler.
This can be done using Apache's mod_rewrite, but I wasn't sure if
that was installed here. I just found out it was and have created
a rule so that everything hangs off bagofspoons.net/blog. This may
have caused a lot of old posts to reappear on the RSS feed.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

A new start
It has been my intention for a while to tidy up my site a bit. One thing I wanted was to
have some content at the top level of my domain, i.e.
bagofspoons.net. Well now there is something there. It will
act as my actual homepage that says something about me. It will also hold some less visible
data for use by various semantic services. So have a look and let me know what needs improving.
It was pointed out to me this week that some of my internal links do not work, particularly
when you view a post on its own page. I tried using relative links, but that obviously has issues.
I may not update those posts as Pyblosxom will consider them to be new if I do, but I will be more
careful in future.

I just figured out why my bookreview plug-in was failing when I clicked on a book. It was expecting
the egrep command to be a different place to where it lives on this server. I edited the code and it
works now. I'm still working out what details to include in my reviews and how to layout the pages, but I've
added my latest couple of reads.
